This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day, the celebration of romantic love. Although intimate relationships can be difficult and stressful, they should never be physically or mentally abusive. According to the Department of Justice, domestic violence is defined as “as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner”.
According to the Florida Coalition against Domestic Violence, law enforcement agencies received 105,668 domestic violence reports in 2016, resulting in 63,193 arrests. Data provided by The State of Florida shows there were 6,829 reported domestic violence offenses in Pinellas County alone, averaging 18.7 domestic violence offenses a day. Keep in mind these were the ones that were actually reported.
