It is clear that it’s all about the money and poor stewardship by our legislators. Instead of going to GPS with a tin cup for pennies the clerk, sheriff, and the other major players in the criminal justice system need to speak up for change in Tallahassee. The Fair Tax proposal for example would have provided the revenue the criminal justice system needs to operate properly.
Furthermore to jump to the conclusion that getting to use credit cards will spare prisoners from sleeping on the floor is disingenuous at best. As long as our city police departments keep filling the jail with the homeless faster than they are released on their own recognizance (free) there will be overcrowding.
By the way your final statement, “Disorderly intoxication: $500 bond; Getting out of jail now on credit: priceless” falls flat as the likelihood of the homeless having a credit card is “nil”.
Also remember that in effect this would be a cash bond and subject to seizure for all fines and court costs.
